Quite simple, actually. Like a refrigerator. A refrigerator extracts heat from food and transfers it to its environment. A heat pump extracts heat from its environment and transfers it to where it is needed. Into your living space. To generate 100% heating power, the heat pump needs about 15 to 25% electricity. The rest is free heat from nature.
How much electricity a heat pump consumes and how high the electricity costs are depends on various factors. How many people live in the household and consume hot water accordingly? Should the room temperature in winter be 19 or 24 degrees Celsius? How well is the house insulated? What type of heat pump will be used? What is the weather like?
Depending on the size, performance and type of heat pump, the noise emission varies. From a barely audible 29 dB(A) at a distance of 1 metre to a moderately loud 60 dB(A). Typical heat pumps for a single-family house are nowadays quieter than some refrigerators and often barely audible. There are legal obligations to fulfil for heat pumps installed outside: The heat pump must have a certain minimum distance to the nearest property. The installation location also has an influence. A heat pump is noisier if it is placed against a wall or if it is free-standing.

A heat pump has a long lifespan of 15 to 25 years. We also know of some that have been working for 40 years – in which case we advise replacing the device with a more energy-efficient one. A special feature of ground source heat pumps is that the ground source itself has a service life of up to 80 years.
Heat pump heating systems work in almost all buildings. Even in those with radiators. Is your building very old and still insufficiently insulated? Then we recommend that you first invest in the building envelope (façade, roof, windows). This will allow you to purchase a smaller and cheaper heat pump later on, which will consume less electricity thanks to the building insulation.
